The Minnesota Lynx have started off the season 2-0 after defeating the New York Liberty at Madison Square Garden Thursday, and are playing with the intent to make it back to the WNBA Finals for third straight season.
Lynx forward Maya Moore had a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double to lead her composed team to a 90-71 win over the New York squad.
Moore had an easier than usual night as all five of the Lynx starters scored in double digits. Lindsay Whalen and Sylvia Fowles combined for 24 with 12 points apiece.
The Liberty star point guard Brittany Boyd, who finished the game with 16 points and four rebounds, could be out of commission for a while after she injured her Achilles in the fourth quarter. Guard Sugar Rodgers led the Liberty with 20 points.
New York scored the first eight points of the game before Minnesota went on a 22-6 run to take an early lead. With both teams attacking the hoop aggressively in the first two quarters, the Lynx led 43-40 at the half.
New York took the lead (45-43) early in the third quarter, and then Minnesota went on a 17-point run to take a 60-47 lead midway through the third quarter.
The Lynx were up by 14 early in the fourth quarter, but Boyd answered with four straight baskets to go on a 7-0 run. She finished the game with16 points.
Minnesota eventually took the game for their second victory of the season.
